Commuted Sums for Hessle Lawn Tennis Club
Hessle Lawn Tennis Club have been awarded £7,280 funding from East Riding of Yorkshire Council as part of Commuted Sums from local housing developments. The funding has been awarded towards refurbishing the clubhouse roof.
In addition to the Commuted Sums award, the club have raised £1,000 of their own funds towards the project, which will cost £8,280 in total.
Michael Alsop, Treasurer at Hessle Lawn Tennis Club, said: "The clubhouse was built in 1977 and as far as I am aware it is the original felt roof. However, over the past 18 months, it has no longer remained watertight, necessitating a complete re-felting. Thanks to support from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, via a commuted sums award, the clubhouse roof can at last be repaired and made secure from the elements. This is something that will be greatly appreciated by the members who all enjoy the facility."
Councillor Gary McMaster, portfolio holder for enhancing communities, said : "I am very pleased that we have been able to facilitate this award through Commuted Sums provided by local housing developments as a condition of their planning approval. I am sure that the members of Hessle Lawn Tennis Club will benefit greatly from these improvements."
Notes to Editors : Commuted Sums
Developers are required to provide Outdoor Playing Space (OPS) as part of all new residential developments above a certain size. This requirement is highlighted in the East Riding Local Plan, supported by the Supplementary Planning Document.
Outdoor Playing Space is specified as space that is available for sport, active recreation or children's play. The space must be of a suitable size and design for its intended purpose, accessible and available to the general public. When a developer cannot provide this within the development itself, a sum of money known as a commuted sum may be paid in lieu of this, by the developer entering into an agreement under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.
