Commuted Sums help Blackburn Leisure Sports and Social Club in Brough
Blackburn Leisure Sports & Social Club in Brough have been awarded £4,906.56 funding from East Riding of Yorkshire Council as part of Commuted Sums from local housing developments.
The funding has been awarded towards fencing around the site and ball retention netting at the perimeter closest to nearby houses.
In addition to the Commuted Sums award, the club have been awarded £14,719.68 from the Football Foundation towards the project, which will cost £19,626.24 in total.
This funding will help to prevent vandalism taking place on the site and to prevent damage to houses near the perimeter of the club.
Paul Smith, Director at Blackburn Leisure Sports & Social Club, said: "We have identified areas of the site where we need to improve security and safety to make the site enclosed and therefore safer for users. We currently have the problem of trespass in certain areas and we need 46 metres of palisade fencing in one area, and 25 metres of mesh fencing at the entrance to the pitches.
"Football pitches have been turned through 90 degrees which means the main path up to the junior pitches goes behind the goal of an 11 aside and therefore puts them in danger of being hit by stray shots. The other end of the pitch now backs onto the perimeter fence so we need ball retention netting there too, to prevent damage to neighbouring property.
"We also have existing ball retention netting that has come down and needs replacing."
Councillor Gary McMaster, portfolio holder for enhancing communities, said: "I am delighted that we have been able to facilitate these much needed Commuted Sums for Blackburn Leisure Sports and Social Club, provided by local housing developments as a condition of their planning approval. I very much hope that, together with the other external funding, these Commuted Sums will lead to real improvements for the Club."

Developers are required to provide Outdoor Playing Space (OPS) as part of all new residential developments above a certain size. This requirement is highlighted in the East Riding Local Plan, supported by the Supplementary Planning Document.
Outdoor Playing Space is specified as space that is available for sport, active recreation or children's play. The space must be of a suitable size and design for its intended purpose, accessible and available to the general public. When a developer cannot provide this within the development itself, a sum of
money known as a commuted sum may be paid in lieu of this, by the developer entering into an agreement under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.
